Adams County commissioners agreed this week to put in place a six-week moratorium on the signing of any agreements with oil and gas companies for new drilling projects in urban areas of the county.

The commissioners, who made the decision on the short-term ban Tuesday night, want more time to devise rules concerning drilling activity near homes and schools.

Specifically, the county won’t sign memorandums of understanding or process new applications for oil and gas special use permits if the project is within designated municipal growth boundaries and is within 1,500 feet of a home or public building.

County leaders have been dealing with the demands of some residents for more comprehensive limitations on where energy firms should be allowed to operate.
